R.I.S.E
Restoring Identity Through Self-Empowerment

The purpose of RISE is to provide a structured, peer-led environment where participants engage in self-reflection, emotional development, and character transformation.
The group is committed to supporting personal growth, emotional literacy, and long-term rehabilitation in alignment with CDCR’s rehabilitative mission.
The RISE curriculum was authored by Elizabeth Sinofsky, founder of From Bars to Brilliance: The Healing Collective, & TEAM, and is rooted in restorative justice, trauma-informed practices, and peer-driven healing.
Why We Believe in This Program
This program is more than a curriculum. It is culture. Inside prison, people inherit a language of survival: silence, anger, armor, and separation. That language may have kept them alive, but it cannot help them heal. What From Bars to Brilliance offers is a new language that is co-written with the very men it serves. A language of emotional literacy, accountability, resilience, and dignity. A culture where strength is measured through empathy, courage, and truth.
We believe in this program because it fills a void that punishment cannot reach. It gives men the tools to name what was once unspeakable, to rewrite the scripts that shaped their lives, and to build relationships on integrity instead of fear. It creates spaces where healing is not weakness but power, and where transformation becomes contagious.
This program was created for them and with them. It is built on lived experience, shared wisdom, and the urgent need to break cycles of harm. It is not theory, it is practice. It is not imposed; it is co-owned. That is why it works.
We believe with conviction because we have seen men rise when they are given not just information but a culture that elevates them.
This is their language of healing.
This is their chance to build a new legacy.
This is the brilliance behind the bars.

R.I.S.E. TALKS
What is RISE Talks?
RISE Talks is a community dialogue series created by From Bars to Brilliance: The Healing Collective. These are shorter programs meant to be delivered weekly in about 1.5 hours a week. We personally call them side quests. Who doesnt love a good side quest?
The series takes place inside correctional facilities, transistion houses and wherever people want to take a deeper dive into our special topics. It gives people directly impacted by incarceration, along with their peers, families, allies, and professionals, a platform to share real stories, lived wisdom, and insights about healing, justice, and personal transformation.
Why Peer-to-Peer Works
Peer-to-peer is powerful because healing does not happen in isolation. When a man begins his own healing journey and is given the right tools, he becomes invested in his growth. That investment naturally turns into leadership. He feels empowered to share what he has learned, not as theory, but as lived truth.
Inside the walls, credibility is everything. Men listen to those who have walked the same tier, carried the same weight, and faced the same struggles. A healing man who chooses to rise becomes a mirror of what is possible. His story carries authority that no textbook or outside voice can match.
Peer-to-peer works because it turns healing into a shared culture. It moves from one man to another, from survival to empowerment, from isolation to community. Every time a man teaches what he has learned, the lesson deepens in him and multiplies in others.
This is how cycles of harm are broken, and cycles of brilliance are born.
